Unauthorized Commercials

Dana Linssen - well known Dutch film critic at NRC Handelsblad - reported on a fine trade mark related topic this weekend in her column 'Kunst op het net' (art on the internet), which she 'headlined' with 'Het Sony-logo is tot Sorry omgevormd' (the Sony-logo is transformed into Sorry): an artproject of the German artist duo (Georg) Graw and (Ursula) Böckler. On their website (www.grawboeckler.de) the artists show so called Unauthorized Commercials - defined by the artists as 'ad spots for well-known brands, created without permission. They are an artistic confrontation with ad spots as a genre. Unlike conventional advertising, brands are shown in their everyday use. Logos and products are depicted just as they are used in daily life - in which trade marks like for example VW, Gorbatschow (vodka), Volvic, Disco, Sony and McDonalds are used. Unauthorised Commercials for Shell, O.B., Chanel and Heinz are on their way. To try to be on the safe side Graw and Böckler accompony each Unauthorized Commercial with the following disclaimer: 'this video exclusively reflects the view of the authors. it is part of the art project unauthorised commercials'. Smells like due cause, don't you think?
