New EU logo for "organic wine"
With effect from 1 August -- just a few short weeks away -- it will be possible for European Union-based wine growers to describe their product as "organic wine" or "vin biologique" instead of the more cumbersome formula "wine issued from organic grapes". According to an article in The Decanter, wines must qualify for "organic" status by fulfilling a number of technical criteria: these include a 30-50% reduction in the amount of added sulphur, a complete ban on sorbic acid and certain other additives and what is described as full traceability". The organic wine logo is depicted on the right.
