BUD-fight in Bulgaria goes to Budvar
The brand battle between Budvar
and Anheuser-Busch over the control of the terms BUD and BUDWEISER has been going on for so long, and has been fought in so many countries, that it is impossible to gain a good overview of it. However, this weblog can bring you news of occasional skirmishes in this battle, and it is thus with thanks to Bulgarian intellectual property specialist Ventsi Stoilov that we report the following news.
The Czech brewer Budvar is said to have achieved some recent success in court scene in the lovely, sunny land of Bulgaria. The legal issue over which this particular action was contested was the validity of Budvar's geographical indication BUD, which Anheuser-Busch wanted to cancel. The City Court, Sofia, refused the application for cancellation (you can read all about it here, here and here). Budvar has now commenced proceedings against some of Anheuser-Busch's brands in Bulgaria.
Ventsi tells us that Budvar has also recently succeeded in legal proceedings against Anheuser-Busch in Italy, concerning which more information can be found here.
