Class 46 has learned from former team member Sasha Yelnik that Russian President Dmitrii Medvedev has this week signed a new law aimed at introducing numerous "softening" changes into the Russian criminal legislation. The amended provisions of the legislation reduce terms of imprisonment for certain types of offences and, in some cases, remove this measure of punishment altogether.

Russia softens criminal sanctions for trade mark infringement
This has had an impact on IP rights too. The new law suggests that a fine of between 500,000 and one million rubles (about £10,000- 200,000), as the main punishment for unlawful use of trade mark rights, would be a suitable substitute to imprisonment.
The new law comes into effect on the day of its publication.
