More GI Regulations protect names in EU

The past few weeks have seen an acceleration in the number of Regulations which accord protected status to the names of specified products within the European Union.  While many of us have little or no familiarity with the subject matter of any given geographical indication -- and we can lead quite rich and fulfilling lives without encountering Spargel aus dem Anbaugebiet Schrobenhausen either professionally or on our dinner plates -- each of these Regulations is a part of European Union law and has an impact on the use of protected terms for descriptive or other purposes as well as affecting the availability of geographical and other terms for trade mark purposes.  It is therefore without apology that Class 46 presents this batch of Regulations, with the promise of more to come in the near future:

* Commission Regulation 895/2010 of 8 October 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications [Halberstädter Würstchen (PGI)]  -- a German boiling sausage encased in a tender skin of sheep's casing.

* Commission Regulation 896/2010 of 8 October 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications [Schrobenhausener Spargel/Spargel aus dem Schrobenhausener Land/Spargel aus dem Anbaugebiet Schrobenhausen (PGI)].  The German asparagus stalks covered by this registration range from white to violet in colour.

* Commission Regulation 897/2010 of 8 October 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications (Suska sechlońska (PGI)). This is a dried, smoked Polish prune.

* Commission Regulation 898/2010 of 8 October 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications [Patata della Sila (PGI)]: the subject of protection is an Italian 'conservation potato'.

* Commission Regulation 899/2010 of 8 October 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications (Mogette de Vendée (PGI)) -- the Mogette being a variety of French bean.

* Commission Regulation 900/2010 of 8 October 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications [Estepa (PDO)]. Estepa is an extra virgin olive oil from the region of Seville, Spain.

* Commission Regulation 901/2010 of 8 October 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications [Φάβα Σαντορίνης (Fava Santorinis) (PDO)]: this is the dried, husked and crushed cotyledon of a Greek lentil.

* Commission Regulation 923/2010 of 14 October 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications [Asparago di Badoere (PGI)], this being an Italian asparagus.
