Swiss student versus UEFA: Watch’EM
In its edition of 17 December 2007 the Swiss online news-site "20 minuten" reports about a project called "Watch' EM" by a group of students from the Swiss city of Luzern, which seems to have prompted the UEFA to threaten them with legal action.
Background to the dispute: The Swiss students have created a special kind of [Swiss] watch intended for use in connection with next year's European Football Championships, which are jointly hosted by Austria and Switzerland. According to "20 minuten", UEFA claims that use of the term "Watch'EM" was an infringement of its trade mark and copyright laws. The German abbreviation for the European Football Championships is EM = Europaeische Meisterschaft. The students' legal advisor, Ueli Grüter, an attorney and lecturer of communications law, argues that the term "EM" was common property (Allgemeingut) and as such should available to be used by anyone.
This dispute is not over yet and we will monitor the next rounds....
