Heineken versus Keineken: trade mark parody in the alps
Heineken has been buying up local Swiss breweries in the last several years and became a dominant player on the Swiss beer market. Not all beer lovers like Heineken and its beer, and recently some enthusiasts in Engelberg, central Switzerland, have founded the association "Keineken" (from German "Kein Heineken" - no Heineken). They intend to brew their own beer, locally and in small quantities.
The association also filed for trade mark protection of their "Keineken" logo (pictured on the left). That was probably asking for trouble: Heineken did not share the laugh and obtained an ex parte injunction against the sale of Keineken beer. The police provisionally confiscated all 1,200 bottle of Keineken and 100 Keineken-branded glasses. Both parties vow to continue the fight.
