Scam Warning: fake correspondence sent on behalf of INPI
We have several times warned our readers regarding several scams and provided information concerning unsolicited requests for payment for filing, renewal or other activities relating to trade marks and other intellectual property rights. It seems that this is becoming a growing concern to the Portuguese Industrial Property Office (see previous posts on the subject), which has published today on their website the following notice (our translation):

"Written communications, similar to an official notification from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), are being sent to holders and applicants for registration of trademarks and patents by an entity designated as Índice Nacional de Publicidade Industrial (translation note: Industrial Property National Index), using the acronym INPI, requesting payments. The body presents itself as www.inpi-pt.org and uses the e-mail atm@inpi-pt.org as point of contact, being easily confused with this Office.

We also inform that the Office has already taken the necessary steps with the competent authorities.

"Warning: These reports are false and have no relationship with the National Institute of Industrial Property, IP"

We salute the Portuguese Industrial Property Office for creating awarness on this issue and hope that the competent authorities' reaction to this problem is adequate.

It would be helpful if marques and Inta together invite the few Trademark Offices (I remember the Japanese and the Australian) that still write directly to the owners despite there is a representative (also in the IR) to refrain from doing this as their behaviour makes easier the confusion with scams. Where there is a registered TM Agent, all mail should be conveied to him and this would accrue value to Agent service, being a protection against scams.
