Woolworths withdraws "Lolita" girls' furniture
On its website the BBC today reports on a case of unfortunate branding: the UK retailer Woolworth has withdrawn bedroom furniture for young girls with the brand name "Lolita" after complaints from outraged parents, who called the branding in "unbelievably bad taste". Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 novel "Lolita" about a sexually precocious young girl became (in)famous for its controversial subject. The BBC quotes Catherine Hanly, the editor of a parenting website, who said a Woolworths press officer had told her staff running the website "had no idea" of the word's connotations: "I expect a company like Woolworths to actually know what it means and the connotations and stuff...". According to the BBC a spokeperson for Woolworths confirmed that the product had been "removed from sale with immediate effect" after the matter had been brought to Woolworths' attention and that it would be investigated how the branding had come about.
