Consideration is being given to adding Arabic, Chinese and Russian as languages in the Madrid System. Assurance is given that the IR fees would not increase. However, WIPO will most likely rely on relay translation using English as the pivot language for translation of applications in Arabic, Chinese and Russian. It is estimated that processing times would be extended by some five working days for applications in the three new languages.

The proposal to add the three languages is being discussed in the Madrid Working Group. MARQUES is participating actively in the issues that the Group has worked on over the years.
