Proposed Industrial Design Treaty: slow going
There's news concerning progress -- or the lack of it -- of WIPO's proposed Industrial Design Treaty. According to a post by Catherine Saez on Geneva-based Intellectual Property Watch, here, the developing countries are standing firm in their insistence that the treaty should provide, in addition to provisions on design registration, requirements relating to mandatory technical assistance and capacity-building. These requirements are contained in draft Article 21.

There's news concerning progress -- or the lack of it -- of WIPO's proposed Industrial Design Treaty. According to a post by Catherine Saez on Geneva-based Intellectual Property Watch, here, the developing countries are standing firm in their insistence that the treaty should provide, in addition to provisions on design registration, requirements relating to mandatory technical assistance and capacity-building. These requirements are contained in draft Article 21.
The article also mentions a warning by WIPO Director-General Francis Gurry that countries should consider best practices objectively when it comes to design protection, rather than just assume that their own way is the best. This blogger finds it strange that, when it comes to negotiating international treaties, countries should be so eager to promote their own design laws as the norm when, back home, they often seem to be so critical of them.
