Unregistered Design Rights?
Reader and copyright guru Professor Estelle Derclaye asks: What other countries, if any, have anything like the UK Unregistered Design Right?
Can readers help? We are looking for:
1 - A short-term right (5-10 years)
2 - Unregistered
3 - Protecting product shapes
4 - Including functional ones.
I do not know of any precise equivalents. There are things like:

I do not know of any precise equivalents. There are things like:
- EU Unregistered Community Design - but shorter lifetime and with different subsistence requirements.
- US Vessel Hull Protection - quite similar wording, but you have to register at the Copyright Office.
- Japanese Unfair Competition law - but just three years protection against copying
- South African functional registered designs - 10 years protection, like UK UDR, but registration is required.
