British bank reaches out to Irish consumers in order to secure ECB cash
The Telegraph has reported today that Nationwide, Britain's biggest mutual building society, plans to expand into Ireland, offering savings products by post, telephone and online. This move has been prompted by the European Central Bank's decision to make funds available to lenders in the Eurozone (ie in Ireland, but not in the UK where Nationwide is based) to help ease problems related to the credit crunch. However, financial groups must have operations in the eurozone. Nationwide is a company that has an extremely active sponsorship policy, as indicated on its website here.
