Poland: jail time for illegal OSCYPEK
The Polish website onet.pl reports the recent conviction of a 45 year old highland woman. The defendant was stopped by the municipal police in Zakopane in January for illegally selling OSCYPEK. The court of first instance (sad rejonowy) sentenced her to a 3,500 PLN fine but the defendant claimed to lack this sum of money. The judge has exchanged the fine for a community service order but she refused to do this. In February the fine was exchanged for 70 days in prison. The lower court's judgment was upheld by the District Court in Nowy Sacz. On 20 June, the convict was served a summons to report in jail to serve the first 14 days of the sentence or to pay 550 PLN as payment of the fine. The defendant, being the mother of seven children, instead of going to jail, decided to sell a calf to pay the fine.
