MARQUES Guide to Web 3.0 now available
The MARQUES Cyberspace Team has published a guide to Web 3.0. It can be downloaded form the Team’s page on the MARQUES website (log-in required).
The guide was prepared for the recent workshops held by the Team at the MARQUES Annual Conference in Madrid.
It provides an introduction (“From Web 1.0 to Web 3.0") and covers Metaverses, NFTs and Blockchains.
It also highlights 10 trade mark issues for brand owners to consider.
The guide states: “Web 3.0 is about reading, writing and experiencing. It promises collective experiences inside the internet, powered by AI, VR, and 3D graphics. It is based on decentralisation with safeguards for user identity and data through encryption and distributed ledger technology.”
The guide notes that the core issue for IP and brand professionals is:
Web 3.0 as envisioned by its innovators is largely permissionless. Decentralised organisations are not above the law but when they are built in a virtual world without jurisdiction where pseudo-anonymity is the norm, the management of IP rights is challenging. To what extent can trade mark management and brand enforcement strategies designed for the physical world accommodate the challenges of the virtual world?
The guide has been drafted by Nick Wood, Vice Chair of the Cyberspace Team and managing director of Com Laude. For more information about the Team, click here.
