30 years of the Madrid Protocol

Happy 30th Birthday to the Madrid Protocol!

Thursday 27 June marked the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks.

Here are some facts to mark the anniversary (thanks to WIPO’s dedicated page):

  • In 2018, there were over 60,000 Madrid registrations
  • By contrast, in 1998 there were 20,000
  • There are now 104 members of the Madrid Union, spanning 120 countries
  • Since the adoption of the Protocol, the Madrid System has added 28 members in Asia, 25 in Europe, 18 in Africa, 4 in Latin American and the Caribbean, 3 in Oceania and 2 in North America

Find links to lots more information about the Madrid System, read the Madrid Yearly Review 2019 and sign up for Madrid email updates, on WIPO’s website.
