Turkish Patent Institute: an important change in practice
The Turkish Patent Institute (TPI) has very recently announced an important change relating to its practice regarding the publication of trade marks. As many readers may already know, the Turkish Trade Mark Bulletin has been published once in a month. However, with effect from February 2016, trade mark bulletins will be published twice a month. Accordingly, the number of opposition deadlines will be doubled. The main reason for this change was reportedly the increase in the number of trade mark applications.
The first bimonthly bulletin will be published on 29 February 2016. This means that the first unusual opposition deadline will fall on 30 May 2016. Since the deadlines will be doubled, an increase within the workload of watch services is expected. It is also predicted that the new practice will create problems during its first months since it is currently not well known by trade mark owners.
