ICANN to fight "domain name tasting"
Further to our post of 11 January 2008 the Associated Press reports on the steps the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers(ICANN), has taken steps to fight "domain name tasting". "Domain name tasting" is the "... online equivalent to the online equivalent of buying expensive clothes on a charge card only to return them for a full refund after wearing them to a party."
AP explains that entrepreneurs have been taking advantage of the five-day grace period to sample domain names, in oder to keep the few that will potentiall generate advertising revenues. AP explains that
"... (the) grace period was originally designed to rectify legitimate mistakes, such as registrants mistyping the domain name they are about to buy. But with automation and a burgeoning online advertising market, entrepreneurs generated big bucks exploiting the policy to test hoards of names."
This practice ties up millions of domain names at any given time and makes it difficult for legitimate individuals to secure a given domain name. In a draft report ICANN has outlined key issues for a committee to study further and craft recommendations. The final report is expected after a public comment period closes at the end of January 2008.
