Greece: What two smartly displayed letters can do for a trademark application
A Greek newspaper publisher filed two trademark applications for "TRENDY WATCH" and "TRENDY WATCH & device" (see left) in connection with "wrist watches", "time measurement apparatus" and other similar goods in class 14. As it turned out, the trademark application was aimed at legally safeguarding the applicant's rights in and to wrist watches that are offered as premium with the newspaper's Sunday edition.

Greece: What two smartly displayed letters can do for a trademark application
The competent Examiner rejected "TRENDY WATCH" affirming that Greek average consumers know a thing or two about "trends" and watches. On the other hand, the little device on top of the word indication, which seems to be a stylized version of T (for trendy) and W (for watch) proved distinctive enough for registration and an adequate "plan B" for the applicant. It also seems, however, that there is a "plan C", as the applicant also filed a third more colorful version. No decision on plan C yet though.
