UK: rival gaming groups Gala and Rank in trade mark dispute
The Times reports that rival gaming groups Gala - the owner of the Grosvenor casino chain and Mecca Bingo - and its competitor Rank are locked in a trade mark dispute. According to the article Rank is thought to be trying to register the device mark “G” after having launched a chain of casinos under the "G" brand. There are currently four "G" casinos out of Gala's 32 sites in Britain, with plans to open another two later in 2008. Gala, who owns 30 casinos, opposed the application based on an earlier trade mark registration for "G". According to The Times "... the need for the group to develop a new casino brand was given extra impetus after it had to scrap the Hard Rock Casino name following Rank’s sale of the burger chain".
The article does not provide any further information as to whether this dispute involves UK, Community and/or international trade marks.
