Poland: beer battles
The beer market in Poland is quite huge and some breweries undertake various activities to attract consumers. The recent trend of drinking non pasteurized beers produced by local breweries has also a short trade mark story. When the trend started couple of years ago, some international companies have decided to cash in on such opportunity. The first one was Carlsberg. The company introduced the local brand of Kasztelan beer as a nationwide product. Some experts quickly noted that the beer is indeed non pasteurized, but at the same time, the brewery filters it to maintain its shelf life for couple of months. According to article available at finanse.wp.pl, such actions forced Marek Jakubiak, the owner of Ciechan and Lwówek Śląski breweries, to apply before the Polish Patent Office for the word trade mark piwo nieutrwalone (English: non preserved beer) Z-384103. Mr Jakubiak declared that this trade mark can be only used by local breweries.
