Brewers mix in over Czech Radler
Heineken has launched legal proceedings against a number of Czech breweries, demanding that they stop using the term ‘Radler’ on their products. According to Heineken, ‘Radler’ -- a term which is used to describe a beer mixed with lemonade -- , is a validly-registered trade mark owned by Heineken Ceska Republika. Competitors of the trade mark proprietor argue that the term is generic (and thus the equivalent of the English term "shandy") and cannot therefore be legally monopolised.
It is understood that Heineken is treating this as a test case, after which it will decide whether to take similar legal actions in other European countries.
