Real Madrid, globalization and religion - a brand development
Recent news that Real Madrid, in the context of promoting their branded resort island, have made a small and yet symbolic change in their logo, just caught this blogger's attention. In our globalized economy and community, the need to show respect to and/or attract investment from the Muslim world, led the historic Spanish football club to remove the cross from their logo. Based on reports, this move, aimed at attracting Muslim fans, coincides with the start of construction on a $1 billion sports tourist resort in the UAE by Real Madrid. The cross has been part of the team's logo for almost a century. It was a part of King Alfonso XIII's crown, which was added to Real Madrid's lcrest in 1920 when he granted the club his royal patronage, also leading to the club's change of name from Madrid Club de Futbol to Real Madrid. It is interesting to note that the logo is also changed in the club's presentation at the UEFA site. A huge fan of historic details relating to crest/logos and no less a fan of religious tolerance and understanding, this blogger is happy to own a Real Madrid official T-shirt with the traditional logo and cannot help but think (as he is getting older and grumpier) that history means remembering and not discarding.
