JAGUAR and LAND ROVER brands head east
After many months of speculation and in the absence of any other credible purchaser, Ford Motor Co. has finally agreed to sell classic British motor brands Jaguar and Land Rover to Indian Tea-to-Model-T conglomerate Tata Motors Ltd for some US$2 billion. Given the current global economic crisis and the recent slump in Jaguar/Land Rover sales, even with a weak dollar this looks like a high price for the two marques and it may be difficult for Tata -- which appears to have promised at least short-term security of employment for the cars' makers -- to avoid outsourcing their manufacture by repatriating them in its native India.
