Austria: 20 years of top level ".at" domain
Happy birthday and herzlichen Glückwunsch: Austria is celebrating 20 years of the top level domain ".at" and 10 years of the domain registry nic.at. The top level domain ".at" was registered at IANA (Internet Assigned Number Authority) in January 1988 and initially administered by the Unversity of Vienna. After a liberalisation of the registration criteria in 1997, domain registrations increased dramatically and the domain registry nic.at started its work in 1998. A full report [in German] on the Austrian success story can be found on the nic.at's website.
As per January 2008 there are 725.978 ".at" domains registered of which 95.80% are .at domains, 3.40% are ".co.at" domains and 0.81 are ".or.at" domains. Most domains are owned by Austrian proprietors (ca. 70%), followed by German (ca. 20%) and Swiss (2.23%) owners.
More information and statistics can be found on the nic.at's website.
