Who we all are...
Country code top level domains v. generic top level domains
Media agency Equimedia reports that according to the Internet registry Nominet, country code top level domain names are not necessarily less reputable than generic top level domains. Domains such as .com, .net and .org are "different" rather than better. Phil Kingsland, who is the director of marketing and communications for Nominet, is quoted as saying that different domain names "... tend to have different kinds of reputations and get used for different kinds of applications. ... [I]t does depend a lot on what you're after." Local businesses in the UK will prefer a .co.uk doman, whereas a global company will choose a .com domain, which was currently the largest domain type with around 50-60 million users.
For those of you that are maintaining a .co.uk domain, Nominet offers a new service "EPP" which went live on 4 February 2008, when Nominet launched its news Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) service. According to Nominet's website:
"This service gives registrars another method of registering and maintaining .uk domain names. The main benefits of using EPP are: Responses to commands are generally instant. You can issue a command to register a domain, get a response and then confirm with your customer that this has happened all in real time."More information on this service can be found here.
