PGI status for "Holsteiner Karpfen"
The German newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt reports in its online edition of 8 December 2007 that "Holsteiner Karpfen" is now a protected geographical indication for German fresh fish, molluscs and crustaceans, and products derived from them. Commission Regulation (EC) No 1164/2007 entering a designation in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications (Holsteiner Karpfen (PGI)) has been published in the European Commission's Official Journal.
The coat of arms of the German state of Schleswig Holstein can be seen above; more information about the history and customs surrounding this particular type of carp fish, which has been farmed in the Holstein region since 1196, can be found in the Lübecker Nachrichten's online edition of 9 December 2007 and in the original application pursuant to Article 6(2) of Council Regulation (EC) No 510/2006.
