Fraudulent use of "Swissness"?
"Swiss" is a powerful brand, it stands for quality, reliability, healthiness, precision. But production costs in Switzerland are high, so the temptation to label a product "Swiss" despite its manufacture abroad is large.
A Swiss consumer protection group (SKS) has today published a list with products that are - according to SKS - misleadingly labelled "Swiss". Some examples:
"Swiss Navy Grape Mints" are produced in China.
"del Lago" sausage is from Spain - despite the Swiss cross on the packaging.
"Coq suisse" is actually from Brazil and Hungary.
Technically, the misleading labels are illegal, but the law is not enforced strictly, and many companies don't seem to care.
Note: these are allegations by the consumer protection group Stiftung für Konsumentenschutz SKS. No court has ruled on the allegations.
