Plan to visit Switzerland? Better leave your fake Rolex at home
Since 1 July 2008, the import of fake trademarked goods into Switzerland is prohibited even if the good is not imported for re-sale. In other words, if you buy a cheap knock-off Gucci bag in Istanbul, or an imitation Rolex in Bangkok, for your personal use, chances are Swiss customs will confiscate it upon your arrival in Zurich. Technically, the provision even applies to goods in transit, however, in practice, I can't imagine that customs officers will fleece transit passengers.
At least the import for non-commercial use is not a criminal offence (art. 65a Trademark Act).
But confiscation is particularly painful if you thought you bought the real thing and paid a hefty price only to find out that you bought a fake - you're both out of your money and out of the product.
