Spain – An oddity: dive into the Trademark Office archives and visit the Grand-grandpas.
A note to the readers: here goes an oddity that would be of the interest of trade mark law sentimentals, lovers of old legal documents or those keen in the history of trade mark law in those days when even the Paris Convention was not around.
On the left: Spanish trademark no. 10 "La Media Luna" ("Half Moon") and device. Original owner Mr. Francisco Boronat. Filing date: March 10, 1866.
The Spanish Patents and Trademarks Office (SPTO) has created a free on-line database called “Historic Archive” -“Archivo Histórico”- that allows the consultation of the early volumes of the SPTO’s Intellectual Property Gazette (from 1886 to 1965). This specific database has a total of 16,306 entered trademarks. An impressive record of royal privileges dating early XIX century are also available on-line and free of charge.
On the right: Spanish trademark no. 4 "Torre del Oro" ("Gold Tower") and device. Original owner Mr. Domingo Castelló. Filing date: November 18, 1865.
Anyone desiring to check whether Grand-grandpa registered a trademark or held some kind of royal privilege (a.k.a. "patent") in Spain in early XIX century can satisfy his/her curiosity here.
