News on the planned Community Trade Mark fee reduction
Class 46 readers may remember that there was some confusion concerning the planned reduction of of the Community Trade Mark fees: should it be a reduction of 50% or 40%?
In December 2008 the European Commission appeared to propose a reduction of Community Trade Mark fees by half. However, the Commission's proposal, which was included in the Commission's European Economic Recovery Plan (see Class 46 post here) was in conflict with an earlier fee reduction deal of 40%, which had been agreed upon in September 2008 (see Class 46 post here). The Financial Times Online now reports that
"The cost of obtaining trademark protection in Europe will be cut by about 40 per cent from May, following an agreement between EU member states and Brussels this week."
The Financial Times Online report adds that the fee cut "... will also help stem the build-up of surpluses - topping €300m ($377m, £268m )" at the OHIM.
Class 46 has checked the OHIM's website but has so far not been able to find any official confirmation of this news item.
