WIPO report reveals trade mark growth
Worldwide trade mark filing activity increased by 5.9% in 2019, according to the latest World Intellectual Property Indicators report published by WIPO on 7 December.
The report collects data from 150 national and regional offices on patent, trade mark, industrial design, plant varieties and GIs.
It estimated that 11.5 million trade mark applications covering 15.2 million classes were filed worldwide in 2019. The number of classes specified grew by 5.9%, the 10th successive year of growth.
China ranked first, whit a class count of 7.8 million, followed by the United States, Japan, Iran and the EUIPO.
Offices with large increases included Brazil (up 22.3%), Vietnam (up 19.34%), Iran (up 18.4%), Russia (up 16.5%) and Turkey (up 15.5%).
Over the 10 years from 2009 to 2019, the proportion of trade mark filing activity in offices in Asia increased from 38.7% to 70.6% while that in Europe fell from 36% to 1.4%.
There were an estimated 58.2 million active trade mark registrations worldwide in 2019, up 15.2% on 2018. Of these, 25.2 million were in China.
The report also estimated that there were around 55,800 geographical indications in force worldwide in 2019. Germany had the largest number (14,289). Wines and spirits accounted for 56.6% of the GIs in force.
