MARQUES takes part in GI conference

Alessandro Sciarra, Chair of the MARQUES GI Team, was a panellist at the Trade Marks and Geographical Indications: Future Perspectives conference in Alicante on 3 and 4 October

Alessandro gave a presentation in the panel on GIs and the ex officio examination of trade mark applications. His presentation covered topics including GIs as absolute grounds for refusal under Article 7(1)(j); searching for GIs; the use of geographical signs in EUTM applications; and general comments about lessons to be learned and areas where improvements are needed.

The conference was attended by almost 450 participants, and speakers included representatives of IP offices, the European Commission, World Trade Organisation, WIPO, owners of GIs and universities.

Alessandro reports: “The practical approach of my presentation was much appreciated and I received much positive feedback from the organisers and the audience.”
