Judges Meeting in Helsinki

The latest MARQUES Judges Meeting was held in Helsinki on 26 November

Introduced by MARQUES Chair Gregor Versondert, the Meeting brought together IP practitioners and IP-specialist judges from Finland’s Market Court.

The Meeting included three sessions on: trade marks and unfair competition; patents and utility models; and procedural issues and questions. In particular, the upcoming changes to the trade mark law (such as the introduction of a cooling-off period and the introduction of a new administrative cancellation and invalidation procedure) were discussed.

The participants included:

  • Trade marks and unfair competition – moderator Sarita Schröder, Hannes Snellman Attorneys Ltd; speakers Market Court Judges Anne Ekblom-Wörlund and Jenni Ihalainen, Markku Tuominen, Roschier Attorneys Ltd and Nina Mikander, Castrén & Snellman Attorneys Ltd
  • Patents and utility models: moderator Sami Sunila, Roschier Attorneys Ltd; speakers Market Court Judges Jussi Karttunen and Petri Rinkinen
  • Procedural issues and questions: moderator Kim Parviainen, Castrén & Snellman Attorneys Ltd; speakers Market Court Judges Sami Myöhänen and Jaakko Ritvala

The Meeting closed with drinks.

Kim Parviainen said the Meeting provided an opportunity for practitioners to ask questions and raise issues about how cases are handled in Finland: “These events are good to discuss issues people have faced and judges can also provide feedback on advocacy.”

He added: “There were lots of practical questions about how to do this or that, and it is helpful for the whole IP community to be able to touch base in this way.”
