Spring Team Meeting in Geneva

Some 170 MARQUES members attended the Spring Team Meeting in Geneva this month, which included a workshop on the Madrid System, a Leadership Meeting of Team chairs, the annual Kay-Uwe Jonas Memorial Lecture and presentations by all 20 MARQUES Teams and Task Forces

Some 170 people attended the Meeting, and were welcomed by the new MARQUES Chair, Gregor Versondert of Procter & Gamble.

Gregor described the Teams as the “backbone of MARQUES” and said he looked forward to “expanding the scope of MARQUES reasonably” for example by holding more meetings in south-east Asia (such as the Luxury Brands Symposium in Hong Kong this month).

He also encouraged Teams and members to look into issues around advertising saying this topic is a “business reality” for many brand owners.

A number of Teams are working on studies related to advertising law already. For example, the Brands and Marketing Team and Regulatory Team are looking at advertising regulation in the US, Europe, China and the Middle East, as well as advertising to children, while the Unfair Competition Team is launching a project on the in-house evaluation/clearance of adverts.

Teams also provided updates on panels and workshops planned for the MARQUES Annual Conference in Prague in September, as well as other meetings scheduled for the coming year. For an up-to-date list of upcoming events, see the MARQUES events page.

The newest MARQUES Team is the Copyright Team, and it already has 25 members. Projects include a summary of the EU Directive on the Copyright Package, to be published online soon, and a study into case law on copyright and brand protection. The Team is also looking to work with other teams with related interests, such as the Designs Team.

Finally, there was a great deal of interest in the Brexit Task Force, which will be making representations on behalf of MARQUES members on issues arising from the UK’s decision to leave the EU – not only to UK institutions but also those in other EU member states.

Following a kick-off meeting, there was a short update on the work of the Task Force. Members can email MARQUES if they want to continue to be updated on its work.
