David was involved in the launch of MARQUES, having been on the steering committee that discussed setting up a trade mark owners’ association in 1984.
A UK and European trade mark attorney, he had a law degree from University College, London and originally worked in-house for Allied Lyons, a FMCG company.
In 1991, he became head of UK operations for the Novagraaf Group (J.E. Evans-Jackson & Co). Then, in 2010, he set up his own firm, Oakleigh IP Services.
David joined the MARQUES Council in 1996 and in June 2003 was appointed Treasurer. In that role, he played a pivotal part not just in managing the association’s finances and budget, but also in planning and researching the annual conferences.
Indeed, David had attended every single MARQUES annual conference since the first one in 1986, except one. A very down-to-earth man, David particularly enjoyed engaging in debates with established friends and was always keen to make new delegates welcome.
Many MARQUES members will have many happy memories of David telling amusing anecdotes over lunch or dinner, and asking thoughtful and direct questions from the audience.
Outside of MARQUES, David had a very active trade mark practice at Oakleigh IP near London (he named the firm after the road he lived in). His other great passion was football, which he played for over 40 years. He was also a coach and referee, and became chairman of Old Woodhouseians FC and life vice president of the county.
David was at his football club on the evening of 28th June when he was taken ill.
David was a great servant to MARQUES and a valued friend to many MARQUES members, and will be greatly missed. Our sympathies are with his wife Dee and all his family at this time.
He was interviewed in the HouseMARQUES newsletter last year. You can read the interview here.
