Are you ready for Villaitana?
MARQUES will be celebrating its 30th annual conference, as well as the 20th anniversary of the EU trade mark system, in Villaitana, Spain from 20th to 23rd September
It will be a “special” and “symbolic” meeting, said Willem Leppink, chair of the Villaitana Conference Team. One of the focuses of the conference will be the impact of the EU trade mark reforms, which started to come into effect earlier this year. “We’ve got used to the changes for a few months, and now it’s easier to talk about them,” said Willem. “Villaitana is a symbolic place to hold the annual conference,” he added. One of the benefits is that many EUIPO staff are expected to participate: “Unlike previous years where we would have an EUIPO session, this year we will have representatives from EUIPO involved in several panels and workshops during the conference.” Another advantage of the location is that everything will be on-site, which should lead to a particularly relaxed, casual atmosphere. As well as the EU trade mark reforms, there will be several sessions based around the theme “Brands versus Trademarks – Trademarks versus brands”. These will include a discussion in the opening session about how trade mark law is keeping up with developments in society, and a panel on indigenous rights and how they affect brand owners. This will feature the US Ambassador to the UN Human Rights Council, Keith Harper. “I think this year’s annual conference will be unique, with a lot of social and professional opportunities. I look forward to seeing everyone there, and to sharing our fond memories of our dear friend David Goldring, who I'm sure we will all greatly miss,” said Willem. Find out more about the programme, social activities and registration fees on the dedicated annual conference page on the MARQUES website, where you can also register.
