Nijntje sees Cathy in Court
Apparently Dick Bruna - author of 'Nijntje' - outside the Netherlands also known as Miffy (left) - has started infringement proceedings against Japanese company Sanrio before the District Court in Amsterdam. At stake is Sanrio's Cathy (right), a character Bruna considers to be a perfect copy of Nijntje. Although on first sight the case seems to be a copyright case, trade mark law might as well be involved, since 'Nijntje' is also protected as figurative trade mark. Bruna's publisher Mercis B.V. is the owner of several figurative trade mark registrations for 'Nijntje'. Not known yet when a decision is to be expected in the case.
