Beans, cheese, peppers in latest round of GIs
A new batch of names has achieved legal protection under the European Union's scheme for the protected geographical indications and protected designations of origin. The new PGIs and PDOs are as follows:
* Commission Regulation 697/2010 of 4 August 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications (Lüneburger Heidekartoffeln (PGI)). Lüneburger Heidekartoffeln are German potatoes with smooth skins, flat eyes and yellow flesh.

*
Commission Regulation 698/2010 of 4 August 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications (Mâconnais (PDO)). This is a goat's milk cheese from Burgundy, France.
*
Commission Regulation 699/2010 of 4 August 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications (Fagiolo Cannellino di Atina (PDO)). The Fagiolo is an Italian kidney bean with a "distinctive kidney shape". It also claims the advantage that you can cook and eat it without having to soak it first.

*
Commission Regulation 700/2010 of 4 August 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications (Pemento de Herbón (PDO)). A Spanish pepper, this product has been given an attractive little logo, depicted on the left.
*
Commission Regulation 702/2010 of 4 August 2010 entering a name in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications (Olomoucké tvarůžky (PGI)). The only indigenous Czech cheese to possess a pungent taste, it has its own cheese museum in Loštice.
