In an interview recently published in the Spanish diary “
Cinco Días”, Mr João Miranda da Sousa (Director of General Affairs and External Relations at OHIM) stated that OHIM’s secret for success is its independence and “total autonomy" from political power.
Mr Miranda mentioned that OHIM is receiving an average of 90,000 applications per year (when it started in 1996 it only received 43,000), this generating revenue of 58 million Euros in 2,007 (with an accumulated benefit of 273 million Euros). He reports that the current staff level is 640 employees (200 of them “teleworking”), and the Office’s productivity has risen 58% in the past few years.
Mr Miranda proved to be in favour of a review of the current official fees, but stated that such a decision was in the hand of the National Offices representing the Member States before the Commission.
